The Visual Perception & Plasticity (VPP) Lab studies neuroplasticity in healthy and clinical populations across the lifespan. We use a combination of psychophysics, eye tracking, fMRI, brain stimulation (tRNS), computational modeling, online crowdsourcing “big-data”, and neuropsychological approaches in our research.
Our current focus is the VIBRANT Study (Vision Improvement through Behavioral Rehabilitaton And Neuroplasticity Training), a multimodal effort integrating visual behavior, neuroimaging, and neurorehabilitation to achieve precision vision recovery in patients with lesions in the visual cortex.
Hiring 💼: The VPP Lab is seeking a full-time Clinical Research Assistant/Associate, a Lab Technician, and a Postdoctoral Researcher. Join us to study visual plasticity in stroke patients and help launch a new intracranial EEG (iEEG) research program on campus at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. Ideal start time is summer 2026. Interested candidates should email Dr. Tina Liu at tina.liu@georgetown.edu with any questions and apply here.
New funding alert 📢: Our PI, Dr. Tina Liu, recently received the AHA Career Development Award, providing three years of support (4/1/2026–3/31/2029). We are grateful to our patients, trainees, mentors, and JORA & OIP for making this possible, and feel fortunate to be part of such a supportive department under strong GUMC leadership. Thanks to the support from AHA, we're thrilled to move forward with the BRIGHT study!
Creative collaboration 💡: If you are a creative content provider (e.g., interested in writing, poetry, visual storytelling, or other creative forms) visiting our webpage, we invite you to explore the intersection of art and science with us. The VPP Lab studies cortical blindness in stroke survivors and is fascinated by the phenomenon of blindsight. We welcome collaborators who can help translate these experiences into evocative, imaginative work.

We are a Translational Cognitive Neuroscience Lab in the Department of Neurology at Georgetown University Medical Center led by Dr. Tina Liu. Our research group shares a common passion to understand the core principles of neuroplasticity in humans. Our long-term goal is to leverage this knowledge to develop precision vision rehabilitation strategies for patients with brain lesions, such as stroke, brain tumors, and epilepsy surgery.
Georgetown offers the best of both worlds – a welcoming and supportive campus community within a lively, world-class capital city. Explore our gorgeous campus and meet our university mascot, Jack the Bulldog.
